The notes to look for
Perfume labels and shop pages list notes. These are the ones that make a perfume smell like this family.
- Vanilla. Warm, creamy and sweet; the most loved note in perfumery and very long-lasting.
- Tonka bean. Sweet, warm and almond-like, a bit like vanilla with hay and marzipan.
- Caramel and praline. Buttery, toasty and sugary, like burnt sugar and hazelnuts.
- Coffee. Roasted, bitter and dark, which balances sweetness.
- Cocoa and chocolate. Dark, creamy and a little bitter.
Vanilla perfume
Vanilla is one of the most-searched notes in perfume, and for good reason: it is warm, comforting and very long-lasting. It sits in the base of a fragrance, so it is the last thing you smell and often the reason a perfume lasts all day. A vanilla can be creamy, smoky, boozy or powdery, so try a few before deciding you do or do not like it.
Making sweet perfume wearable
The best gourmands balance the sugar with something else: a bitter coffee note, a woody base, a touch of salt or a fresh citrus top. If sweet perfumes usually feel like too much, look for one with a dark or bitter note on the label, and start with just one spray.
When to wear gourmand perfume
Cold weather, cosy days, evenings out and anywhere you want comfort. Sweet scents feel best in cool air, and can feel heavy in heat.
How to wear it
Gourmands are strong and long-lasting. One or two sprays is usually plenty, and if you work in a shared space, choose a lighter gourmand with some fresh or woody notes.
Is this family for you?
You will probably love it if…
You love vanilla baking, caramel, coffee, chocolate and anything that smells like a bakery or a café.
Look elsewhere if…
You find sweet scents sticky or overwhelming, or you want something fresh and clean.
Neighboring families and layering
Most people love two or three neighboring families. If you like gourmand, you will probably also like:
- Amber and spice: Warm, rich, glowing. Winter, evenings, special nights.
- Floral: Romantic and full. Weddings, dates, any lovely day.
A gourmand layers well under a floral for a sweeter bouquet or over amber for something richer.
How to test it
Judge a perfume after thirty minutes, not three seconds. Spray paper first, put your two finalists on skin, then smell again at 30 minutes, two hours and six hours. Our guide to choosing a perfume walks through the whole trip, and eau de parfum vs eau de toilette explains the strengths.
