How we write, check and correct.

The rules every SOUL guide follows: where the facts come from, how pages are kept current, how we stay independent of the brands we cover, and how to tell us when we got something wrong.

Who writes SOUL

Guides are written and edited by SOUL's small editorial team under one pen name, Yasmine Auclair. We say so on every author box because you should know who is talking to you. One byline means one standard: every guide is edited against the rules on this page before it goes up.

None of us is a doctor or a dermatologist, and we never write as if we were. Where a guide touches health, skin, safety or the law, it says what the authorities say and links to them.

Where the facts come from

Facts that can be checked are checked against primary sources: medical and professional bodies such as the American Academy of Dermatology and the NHS, regulators such as the FDA and the FTC, standards bodies such as GIA for diamonds and pearls, and peer-reviewed studies on PubMed. Those sources are listed at the end of the article that relies on them.

Product recommendations come from research and from what real customers report in published reviews, as set out on How we choose. We do not present opinion as fact, and we do not invent experiences, testimonials or numbers.

Style guides (what to wear, how to put an outfit together) are editorial judgement. Where they state a fact, such as a karat mark or a fabric label rule, they cite it.

How pages are kept current

Every guide shows two dates: when it was published, and when it was last checked or updated. "Updated" appears only when the article itself changed: new sections, corrected facts or new sources. We never change a date to make a page look fresh.

Prices, availability and brand policies change faster than guides do, so we link to the retailer rather than quoting a price that will go stale.

Independence and money

SOUL earns a commission when you buy through some of our links, at no extra cost to you. Brands cannot pay to be included, cannot see a page before it is published, and cannot change what it says. A partner is named as a partner on the page.

SOUL also sells its own digital guides, the SOUL Editions. When an article mentions one, it is clearly ours.

Corrections

When we get something wrong, we fix the page and mark it updated with the date, rather than editing the mistake away silently.

Spotted an error? Email soul@soulhavenco.com or use the contact page, with the page and what is wrong. A person reads every message.

Feedback and requests

Questions, suggestions for a guide we should write, and takedown or rights requests go to the same address. Readers can also leave a note at the end of most articles.
