The real test isn't how a piece photographs on day one. It's whether it survives showers, sleep and a year of you forgetting it's there — and still looks like gold the morning you notice it again.
Ten minutes of reading here will save you from most of the disappointments. If you only read two things first, make them 14k vs 18k for daily wear and how to tell if gold is real — between them they cover almost every way a purchase goes wrong.
Solid gold is gold all the way through. Gold-filled has a thick bonded layer and genuinely lasts years. Gold-plated is a microns-thin coat that wears through — often within months on a ring or chain that moves against skin. The listing will rarely say which it is in plain words, so check it yourself.
Higher karat is purer but softer. For something you never take off, 14k is the sweet spot: enough alloy to resist scratching, enough gold to keep color. 22k looks extraordinary and dents if you close a car door on it. We compared the two properly in 14k vs 18k.
A hallmark — 585, 750, 14K, GF — tells you what the maker claims, not what you have. Stamps are cheap to counterfeit and easy to apply to plated stock. Treat one as a starting point, then confirm it with weight, a magnet and the wear at the clasp, which is where a plated piece gives itself away first.
Chlorine and salt attack the alloy metals, not the gold, which is how a piece goes dull and patchy rather than simply thinner. Solid and gold-filled tolerate a shower. Plated does not, whatever the listing says.

Not in the way plated does. Gold-filled has a bonded layer roughly a hundred times thicker than plating, so it survives years of daily wear. It can dull with cosmetics and sweat, but a soft cloth restores it.
Yes, and that is the point of buying it. Avoid chlorinated pools and salt water where you can, since those attack the alloy metals and dull the color over time. Everyday showering is fine.
That is the copper in the alloy reacting with acidity on your skin, usually accelerated by soap residue trapped under the band. It indicates a low karat or a plated piece wearing through, not a fake.
A pair of small hoops and one fine chain, both 14k solid or good gold-filled. They go with everything, survive daily wear, and you will find out quickly whether you actually wear jewelry before spending more.
