Hair extensions: every type compared, and how to avoid damage

Hair extensions compared: clip-in, halo, tape-in, sew-in, micro-link and keratin bonds, how long each lasts, human vs synthetic, and protecting your hair.

By Last checked

The short answer

Clip-in and halo extensions are temporary and gentlest; tape-ins, wefts and bonds are semi-permanent. Tape-ins and wefts last 6 to 8 weeks between move-ups; keratin bonds 3 to 4 months. Human hair can be heat-styled and colored; synthetic is cheaper but less versatile. Match the color at the ends and choose a weight your own hair can carry.

  • Too heavy, tight or long-worn extensions can cause traction hair loss.

Hair extensions add length, volume or both, and the type you choose decides how much they cost, how long they last and how much strain they put on your own hair. Clip-ins are temporary and gentlest; tape-ins, wefts and keratin bonds are semi-permanent and need a professional. Below is every main type of hair extension compared, human versus synthetic hair, how to choose, and how to avoid damaging your natural hair.

Semi-permanent methods should be fitted and removed by a trained stylist.

Human hair or synthetic?

  • Human hair can be heat-styled, colored and blends naturally. "Remy" means the cuticles run the same direction, which reduces tangling. It costs more and lasts longer.
  • Synthetic is cheaper and holds a style, but usually cannot take heat and looks shinier. Fine for occasional clip-ins.

How do you choose?

  1. Match the color at the ends, not the roots, in daylight. Many people blend two shades.
  2. Choose weight for your hair: too much hair on fine strands pulls and shows.
  3. Match your texture: straight, wavy, curly or kinky-straight.
  4. Start with clip-ins if you are not sure you will like the length.

Protecting your natural hair

The main risk of extensions is traction alopecia: hair loss from constant pulling, which the American Academy of Dermatology links to weaves and extensions. It can become permanent.

  • Stop if you feel pain, tightness or see bumps at the attachment points.
  • Keep semi-permanent extensions in only as long as recommended, and take breaks between sets.
  • Remove clip-ins before sleeping.
  • Never pull or cut out bonds yourself.
  • Brush from the ends up with a soft-bristle loop brush, holding the hair at the root.

General guidance, not medical advice. Sudden, patchy or heavy hair loss, or loss with other symptoms, should be checked by a doctor or dermatologist.

Questions people ask about this

What are the best hair extensions for fine hair?

Halo extensions, light clip-ins or tape-ins, because they spread weight over a wide area. Avoid heavy wefts or too much added hair on fine strands.

How long do hair extensions last?

Clip-ins and halos are worn for a day. Tape-ins and wefts last about 6 to 8 weeks before moving up; keratin bonds about 3 to 4 months. Good human hair can be reused for several months to a year.

Do hair extensions damage your hair?

They can if they are too heavy, too tight or left in too long, causing traction hair loss. Choose the right weight, follow removal schedules and take breaks.

Are human hair extensions worth it?

For regular wear, yes: they can be heat-styled and colored, blend better and last longer. Synthetic is fine for occasional use.

What are the least damaging hair extensions?

Clip-ins and halo extensions, because they are removed every day and put little continuous strain on the hair.
