Lab-grown vs natural diamonds: the one difference that actually matters
They are the same material, graded on the same scale. The real difference is resale — and the case against lab-grown leaves out what natural diamonds resell for too.
Search this question and every page that comes back is owned by somebody selling one of the two answers. Jewelers who stock both hedge. The sites that sell only mined stones lean on resale value. The lab-grown sellers lean on price and ethics. None of them tell you the thing that actually decides it, which is smaller and duller than either side would like.
The part nobody disputes
A lab-grown diamond is a diamond. Not a simulant, not cubic zirconia, not moissanite — the same crystalline carbon, the same 10 on the Mohs scale, the same refractive index, the same fire under a restaurant light. It is graded by the same laboratories, on the same colour and clarity scales, as anything pulled out of the ground. A gemologist cannot tell them apart by eye or with a loupe. Separating them takes specialist equipment looking for growth patterns, and the reason that equipment exists is precisely that nothing simpler works.
So when a sales assistant says a lab stone is “not a real diamond,” that is not a technical claim. It is a commercial one.
The price gap, and why the number keeps moving
Here is where the pages contradict each other. Some still say lab-grown runs 15 to 30 per cent below mined. Others say 80 per cent or more. Both numbers were true — just not in the same year.
When lab production was small, the discount was modest. As growing capacity scaled through the early 2020s, the wholesale price of lab material fell hard and kept falling, because supply of a manufactured good expands to meet demand in a way a mine cannot. The gap widened year over year. A page quoting 20 per cent is not lying; it is just old, and nobody goes back to update a blog post that is still bringing in traffic.
The practical version: at the same carat, colour and clarity, expect to pay a large multiple less for the lab stone. Which means the honest way to use that gap is not to buy the same ring cheaper. It is to decide what you want to do with the difference — a bigger stone, a better setting, or simply not spending it.
The one real difference
Resale. A lab-grown diamond has very little of it, because anyone who wants another one can have another one made. Scarcity is what holds a price up, and manufactured goods do not have it. This is the argument the mined-diamond industry makes, and on its own terms it is correct.
What that argument leaves out is what a natural diamond resells for.
Retail jewelry carries a large markup. The moment a mined stone leaves the shop it is a second-hand stone, and second-hand stones are bought by dealers at trade prices, not retail ones. People who have actually tried to sell an engagement ring — rather than read about it — tend to describe recovering a fraction of what was paid, sometimes a small one. Natural diamonds hold value better than lab-grown ones. That is not the same as holding value.
So the resale question is real, but it is a comparison between poor and worse, dressed up as a comparison between an investment and a loss. If you were genuinely buying a stone as a store of value, a jewelry shop is close to the worst place to do it. If you were buying it to wear — which is what almost everybody is doing — the resale gap is a difference in something you were never going to collect.

What about ethics?
This gets claimed hard in both directions and deserves less certainty than it gets. Lab growing avoids the extraction problems associated with mining, and that is a genuine point. It is also energy-intensive, and how clean it is depends entirely on the grid where the reactor sits, which almost no retailer discloses. Meanwhile mining is a significant employer in several economies that have few alternatives, so “no mining” is not automatically “no harm done.”
If ethics is your deciding factor, the useful move is to ask a specific question — where was it grown, on what energy, or where was it mined and under what certification — and to treat an unwillingness to answer as the answer.
How to actually decide
Strip out the marketing and you are left with two honest questions.
Do you want the largest, cleanest stone your budget allows? Buy lab-grown. It is the same material and you will get visibly more of it. Nobody will know unless you say so, and you should say so, because there is nothing to be ashamed of.
Does it matter to you that the stone is old? This is the one legitimate reason to pay for mined, and it has nothing to do with money. Some people want the object to have a history — to have existed before them. That is not irrational and it is not a thing a reactor can supply. If that feeling is what you are buying, buy it deliberately, and stop pretending the decision is financial.
What does not hold up is the middle position: paying the mined premium as an investment. That is the one version of this decision where you lose on both sides.
Before you buy, either way
Get the certificate, and get it from a named laboratory rather than the shop’s own paperwork. Check that the report number is inscribed on the girdle. For lab-grown, confirm the report says so explicitly — it is required, and a vendor being coy about it is telling you something. And ignore clarity grades above the point where the inclusions stopped being visible to you; you are paying for a certificate line, not for anything you can see.
The setting deserves more of your attention than most people give it, because a setting is what actually fails. Prongs wear. A stone that is not checked once a year is a stone that eventually falls out of a ring you love, and that costs more than any grading distinction on this page.
