Semi-permanent hair dye: how long it lasts and how to use it
How semi-permanent hair dye works, how it compares with demi and permanent color, what it can and cannot do, how to apply it at home and make it last.
The short answer
Semi-permanent dye coats the hair surface, has no ammonia or peroxide, and lasts about 4 to 12 washes. It cannot lighten hair or fully cover grey; vivid shades need lightened hair to show. Apply to clean, conditioner-free, towel-dried hair and skip shampoo for 48 to 72 hours.
- Make it last with cool water, sulfate-free shampoo and dye mixed into conditioner.
- Patch test 48 hours before, every time.
Semi-permanent hair dye coats the outside of the hair rather than penetrating it, contains no ammonia or peroxide, and fades over roughly 4 to 12 washes. That makes it the gentlest way to change color, but it has limits: it cannot lighten hair, and on dark hair it only shows as a tint. Below is how semi-permanent dye compares with demi and permanent color, what it can and cannot do, how to apply it at home and how to make it last.
Semi-permanent vs demi-permanent vs permanent
| Type | How it works | Lasts | Can it lighten? | Covers grey? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Semi-permanent | Coats the hair surface; no developer | 4 to 12 washes | No | Blends a little |
| Demi-permanent | Low-volume developer, enters the outer layer | About 24 washes | No | Blends grey |
| Permanent | Ammonia and developer open the cuticle and change pigment | Until it grows out | Yes, by a few levels | Yes, fully |
| Color-depositing conditioner | Very light surface tint | A few washes | No | No |
Fade times vary with hair porosity: damaged or bleached hair grabs color fast but also loses it fast.
What semi-permanent dye can do
- Vivid colors on lightened hair: pink, blue, purple, teal and pastels show truest on pale blonde.
- Tone and shine on natural hair: a copper, red or brown tint adds richness.
- Try a color before committing.
- Refresh faded color between salon appointments.
What it cannot do: lighten, fully cover grey, or make a vivid shade show brightly on dark hair. For that, hair must be lightened first. Our peekaboo hair guide shows a way to try vivids on a hidden section only.
How do you apply semi-permanent dye at home?
- Patch test 48 hours before.
- Wash with a clarifying shampoo and no conditioner, then towel-dry.
- Protect skin with petroleum jelly along the hairline, ears and neck. Wear gloves.
- Section hair into four and apply generously, roots to ends.
- Leave on for the time on the pack (often 20 to 45 minutes). Most semi-permanent dyes are safe to leave longer for a stronger result, but check the label.
- Rinse in cool water until it runs mostly clear. Skip shampoo for 48 to 72 hours.
How do you make it last longer?
- Wash less often, in cool water, with sulfate-free shampoo.
- Mix a little dye into your conditioner to top it up.
- Use heat protectant and avoid chlorine; both strip color.
- Sleep on a dark pillowcase for the first week; vivids can transfer.
Prefer something even gentler? A hair gloss adds shine and tone. For natural shades, see brown and blonde hair colors.
Do a patch test 48 hours before any dye, even one you have used before: the FDA notes that hair dyes can cause allergic reactions, and the risk can appear after years of use.
Questions people ask about this
How long does semi-permanent hair dye last?
About 4 to 12 washes, depending on the shade and your hair. Damaged or bleached hair takes color fast but also loses it faster.
Does semi-permanent hair dye damage hair?
It is the gentlest dye type because it contains no ammonia or peroxide and only coats the hair surface. Some formulas even condition.
Will semi-permanent dye show on dark hair?
Only as a subtle tint, mostly visible in sunlight. Vivid shades like pink or blue need the hair lightened first to show brightly.
Can semi-permanent dye cover grey hair?
It blends grey slightly but does not fully cover it. Demi-permanent blends grey better, and permanent color covers it fully.
Should I do a patch test for semi-permanent dye?
Yes, 48 hours before every application. Allergic reactions to hair dye can develop even after years of use.
