The notes to look for
Perfume labels and shop pages list notes. These are the ones that make a perfume smell like this family.
- Bergamot. Sparkling and slightly floral, the citrus in many classic colognes and Earl Grey tea.
- Lemon. Sharp, sunny and clean, with a little zest.
- Grapefruit. Juicy and slightly bitter, with a modern edge.
- Mandarin and orange. Sweeter and rounder than lemon, with a juicy, friendly feel.
- Neroli. The blossom of the bitter orange tree: citrus freshness with a honeyed floral heart.
Citrus for summer
Searches for a summer perfume peak every year because heat changes how fragrance behaves: warm skin projects scent, so heavy perfumes feel stronger and fresh ones feel lovely. Citrus, green and aquatic scents are the usual summer picks, and one or two sprays are plenty.
Why citrus fades so fast
Perfume is built from ingredients that evaporate at different speeds, in layers called the top, heart and base notes. Citrus oils sit in the top layer, the first thing you smell and the first thing to go, usually within the first hour. A citrus that lasts is usually one with other notes underneath it.
When to wear citrus perfume
Hot weather, mornings, the office, the gym bag, and days you want to feel awake. It is the family most people reach for in summer.
How to wear it
Citrus oils are among the lightest in perfumery, so they evaporate fast even in an eau de parfum. Plan to reapply in the afternoon, carry a small travel atomizer and look for a citrus with woody or musky base notes if you want it to last.
Is this family for you?
You will probably love it if…
You love the smell of a peeled orange, lemonade or a cold gin and tonic, and you like perfume that smells like fresh air more than like perfume.
Look elsewhere if…
You want a scent that lasts all day without reapplying, or you want something warm and cosy in winter.
Neighboring families and layering
Most people love two or three neighboring families. If you like fresh citrus, you will probably also like:
- Green and aromatic: Crisp, outdoorsy, calm. Spring, weekends, work.
- Aquatic and clean: Fresh laundry and skin. Every day, the gym, summer.
A woody or musky base underneath, or a matching body wash, gives a citrus staying power.
How to test it
Judge a perfume after thirty minutes, not three seconds. Spray paper first, put your two finalists on skin, then smell again at 30 minutes, two hours and six hours. Our guide to choosing a perfume walks through the whole trip, and eau de parfum vs eau de toilette explains the strengths.
