The notes to look for
Perfume labels and shop pages list notes. These are the ones that make a perfume smell like this family.
- White musk. Soft, clean and skin-like; a lab-made note that gives many clean perfumes their cotton-and-warm-skin feel.
- Sea and ozone notes. Cool, salty and airy; created in the lab because the sea itself cannot be captured.
- Cotton and linen. An impression of clean, sun-dried fabric, usually built from musks and aldehydes.
- Aldehydes. Sparkling, soapy and slightly metallic; they lift a fragrance and give it a freshly washed feel.
- Sea salt. A mineral, slightly sweet, sun-warmed-skin effect.
White musk perfume
White musk is the heart of many clean fragrances. It is a lab-made musk (the animal source is no longer used) that smells soft, clean and a little like warm skin or fabric. Musk lasts well on the skin, so a musk-heavy clean perfume often wears longer than a citrus one.
Aquatic and sea scents
Aquatic or marine notes imitate sea air and water. They are built in the lab, usually from a mix of molecules that smell cool, airy and slightly salty. They are very popular in summer and in warm climates because they feel refreshing rather than heavy.
When to wear clean perfume
Every day, the gym, the office, summer and hot climates, and anywhere you want to smell fresh without announcing it.
How to wear it
Clean scents sit close to the skin, so they suit people who want a quiet signature. Because they are light, spray a little more or reapply midday, and use a body lotion in the same scent to build it up.
Is this family for you?
You will probably love it if…
You love clean laundry, sea air, a fresh shower or warm skin, and you like a fragrance that is almost a skin scent.
Look elsewhere if…
You want a scent people notice from across the room, or you like rich, sweet or smoky perfumes.
Neighboring families and layering
Most people love two or three neighboring families. If you like aquatic and clean, you will probably also like:
- Fresh citrus: Bright, clean, energizing. Daytime, heat, the office.
- Soft and powdery: Cosy, elegant, close to the skin. Office, autumn.
Clean scents layer easily under almost anything: a white musk body product under a floral or citrus gives it a soft, skin-close base.
How to test it
Judge a perfume after thirty minutes, not three seconds. Spray paper first, put your two finalists on skin, then smell again at 30 minutes, two hours and six hours. Our guide to choosing a perfume walks through the whole trip, and eau de parfum vs eau de toilette explains the strengths.
