The notes to look for
Perfume labels and shop pages list notes. These are the ones that make a perfume smell like this family.
- Iris. Cool, buttery and powdery, from the root of the iris; one of the most expensive raw materials in perfumery.
- Violet. Sweet, soft and slightly candied, like violet pastilles.
- Heliotrope. A sweet, almond-vanilla powder note, like marzipan dusted with sugar.
- Soft musk. Clean and skin-like; it blends the powder into the skin.
- A little vanilla. Warms the powder without making it sweet.
Iris and violet
Iris and violet are the two notes behind most powdery perfumes. Iris comes from the root of the iris plant, which is dried and aged for years before it is turned into a buttery, powdery material. Violet is sweeter and more playful. Together they give the cool, elegant powder that many people associate with high-end perfume.
When to wear powdery perfume
The office, autumn and spring, and any day you want to smell polished and quiet. Many people find it comforting.
How to wear it
Powdery scents are soft, so an eau de parfum and two sprays is a good start. They suit close contact: hugs, offices and small rooms.
Is this family for you?
You will probably love it if…
You love face powder, lipstick, violets, a cashmere sweater or the inside of a vintage make-up bag.
Look elsewhere if…
You find powdery scents dated, dusty or stuffy, or you want something bright and fresh.
Neighboring families and layering
Most people love two or three neighboring families. If you like soft and powdery, you will probably also like:
- Floral: Romantic and full. Weddings, dates, any lovely day.
- Aquatic and clean: Fresh laundry and skin. Every day, the gym, summer.
Layer powdery with a floral for a softer bouquet or with a woody base to ground it.
How to test it
Judge a perfume after thirty minutes, not three seconds. Spray paper first, put your two finalists on skin, then smell again at 30 minutes, two hours and six hours. Our guide to choosing a perfume walks through the whole trip, and eau de parfum vs eau de toilette explains the strengths.
