Dry shampoo: how to use it properly, which type to choose, and when to wash instead

Dry shampoo explained: how it works, spray vs powder vs foam, how to apply it for volume, dark hair tips, scalp health, and the aerosol benzene recalls.

By Last checked

The short answer

Dry shampoo absorbs oil at the roots; it does not clean the scalp. Apply to dry roots in sections, wait, massage, brush and cool-blast. Use tinted formulas on dark hair, foams on curls.

  • Wash after a day or two to avoid buildup; aerosol recalls in 2021 to 2022 involved benzene.

Dry shampoo soaks up oil at the roots so hair looks fresher and fuller between washes. Used well, it adds a day to a blowout, gives fine hair lift, and saves time on busy mornings. Used badly, it leaves a white cast, a gritty feel, and buildup on the scalp. Here is how dry shampoo works, which type suits your hair, how to apply it properly, and why it should never fully replace washing.

How does dry shampoo work?

Most dry shampoos use absorbent starches or powders, such as rice or corn starch, clays or silica, to soak up sebum at the roots. Many also add a little fragrance and a texturizing effect that separates strands and adds grip. Dry shampoo does not clean your scalp; it hides oil and odor until your next wash.

Which type of dry shampoo should you choose?

Dry shampoo types compared
TypeGood forWorth knowing
Aerosol sprayFast, even coverage and volumeShake well and spray from a distance to avoid a white cast
Non-aerosol spray or mistLight oil control without propellantsOften slightly damp at first; let it dry
PowderPrecise application on the part and hairlineTap on with a brush; can be messy
Foam or creamVery fine or textured hairApplied with fingertips; less powdery feel
TintedDark, red or deep brown hairAvoids the gray cast that white powders leave

If you have dark hair, a tinted formula makes the biggest difference to how natural it looks.

How to use dry shampoo properly

  1. Apply to dry hair, ideally the night before or a few hours ahead, so the powder has time to absorb oil.
  2. Section your hair and spray or dust only the roots, along the part, crown, hairline and nape where oil collects.
  3. Hold an aerosol 6 to 8 inches away and use short bursts rather than one long spray.
  4. Wait a minute or two, then massage it in with your fingertips.
  5. Brush through to remove excess and distribute the powder.
  6. Blast with a cool dryer for extra lift and to dissolve any leftover white.

Dry shampoo for volume

Even on clean hair, a little dry shampoo at the roots adds grip and fullness, which is why stylists use it before updos. Flip your hair upside down, spray the roots lightly, massage, then flip back. It also helps curtain bangs stay fresh: apply it to the roots of the bangs the night before.

Is dry shampoo bad for your hair?

Occasional use is fine for most people. Problems come from using it day after day without washing:

  • Buildup on the scalp, which can feel itchy or flaky.
  • Clogged-feeling follicles and dullness if residue is not washed away.
  • Dryness and breakage if powders are brushed roughly through dry hair.

A practical rule: use dry shampoo for one or two days at most, then wash properly. A clarifying shampoo once every week or two removes leftover residue. If you have scalp conditions such as dandruff or dermatitis, ask a dermatologist before relying on dry shampoo.

What about benzene in aerosol dry shampoos?

In 2021 and 2022, several brands recalled aerosol dry shampoos because of potential benzene, a chemical that can cause cancer. Procter & Gamble recalled aerosol dry shampoo and dry conditioner sprays in December 2021, and Unilever recalled select lots of Dove, Nexxus, Suave, TIGI and TRESemmé dry shampoos in October 2022. Unilever said its investigation traced the benzene to the propellant that pushes product out of the can, and that an independent health evaluation found daily exposure at the levels detected would not be expected to cause adverse health effects. The recalled products were made before late 2021. If you are concerned, check old cans against recall lists, or choose a powder, foam or non-aerosol formula.

Tips for dark, curly and fine hair

  • Dark hair: choose a tinted formula, and always brush and cool-blast to remove any gray film.
  • Curly and coily hair: a foam or a light mist at the scalp avoids disturbing curls; skip heavy powders.
  • Fine hair: a light spray at the roots adds volume; too much makes hair dull and stiff.
  • Thick hair: work in sections so the product reaches the scalp, not just the top layer.

Make your wash day go further

  • Wash at night, so hair dries and settles by morning.
  • Use a silk pillowcase, which causes less friction; see whether a silk pillowcase is worth it.
  • Style for day two: a sleek bun, a claw clip or loose waves hide oil well.
  • Lower the heat on styling tools; see heat damage and styling tools.
