Ozempic hair loss: why it happens and what helps

Why hair sheds on a GLP-1, how long it lasts, what helps, what to know about biotin and when to see a doctor or dermatologist.

By Last checked

The short answer

Shedding on a GLP-1 is usually temporary, caused by fast weight loss and low intake. Eat enough protein and calories, ask about iron, vitamin D and thyroid tests, and style gently.

  • See a doctor if it lasts beyond six to nine months or you have bald patches or a sore scalp.

Hair shedding is a common complaint on GLP-1 medicines such as Ozempic, Wegovy and Mounjaro. It is usually a temporary shedding triggered by fast weight loss and lower eating, not by the drug damaging follicles, and it usually settles within about six to nine months as hair regrows.

This guide is education, not medical advice. It does not tell you to start, stop or change any medicine or dose. Talk to your prescriber before you change how you eat or train.

Why it happens

Rapid weight loss, low calories and low protein can push many hairs into their resting phase at once. About two to four months later they shed, a pattern called telogen effluvium. The American Academy of Dermatology describes shedding after a physical stress as usually temporary, and hair typically regrows once the trigger passes.

What helps

  • Enough protein. Hair is mostly protein. Hitting your daily protein target is the first thing to check. See what to eat on a GLP-1.
  • Enough calories and variety. Very low intake makes shedding worse. Tell your prescriber if you cannot eat enough.
  • Blood tests. Ask your doctor whether to check iron (ferritin), vitamin D, thyroid and B12 if shedding is heavy.
  • Gentle styling. Loose styles, a wide-tooth comb, less heat and a soft scrunchie. Avoid tight ponytails.
  • A slower pace. If you are losing weight very fast, ask your prescriber whether that is expected.

What about biotin and hair vitamins?

Biotin rarely helps unless you are deficient. The FDA warns that high doses can interfere with some lab tests, including heart and thyroid tests, so tell your doctor before any blood test if you take it. Our guide to foods for hair growth covers what your hair actually needs.

When to see a doctor

See a doctor or dermatologist if shedding lasts beyond about six to nine months, if you have bald patches, a sore or scaly scalp, or if you have other symptoms such as fatigue or cold intolerance that suggest thyroid or iron problems.

Questions people ask about this

Does Ozempic cause hair loss?

Hair shedding is a commonly reported side effect, and it is usually temporary shedding after fast weight loss and lower eating. It generally settles within months as hair regrows.

How long does GLP-1 hair loss last?

Shedding usually starts two to four months after weight loss begins and often settles within about six to nine months. Talk to a doctor if it lasts longer.

Will my hair grow back after Ozempic hair loss?

In most cases yes, because telogen effluvium does not damage follicles. Enough protein, calories and nutrients support regrowth.

Should I take biotin for hair loss on a GLP-1?

Biotin rarely helps unless you are deficient, and high doses can interfere with lab tests. Ask your doctor first and tell them before any blood test.
