Smoothie recipes for weight loss that actually keep you full
Five smoothie recipes for weight loss with 13 to 29 g of protein, what makes a smoothie filling, how many calories to aim for and which ingredients to skip.
The short answer
No smoothie burns fat; it helps weight loss only by replacing a meal and keeping you full. Drinks are less filling than food, so a weight-loss smoothie needs 20 to 30 g protein and fiber. Aim for about 250 to 400 calories for a meal smoothie and 150 to 200 for a snack.
- Skip juice bases, honey, sorbet and flavored yogurt: they add sugar with none of the fullness.
- Use one smoothie a day to replace a meal, not on top of your usual breakfast.
No smoothie burns fat. What a smoothie can do for weight loss is replace a breakfast or snack with something that has fewer calories and keeps you full for longer, and most smoothies sold as "weight loss" fail at the second part. Drinks are less filling than the same calories eaten as food: in one classic study, people given extra calories as a drink ate no less at their next meals, while the same calories as solid food were compensated for (DiMeglio and Mattes, 2000). So a smoothie for weight loss has to be built to fill you up: high in protein, with fiber, thick enough to drink slowly, and around 250 to 400 calories if it replaces a meal.
What makes a smoothie good for weight loss
| Built to keep you full | Typical fruit smoothie | |
|---|---|---|
| Protein | 20 to 30 g, from yogurt, milk or powder | Often under 5 g |
| Fiber | 6 g or more, from whole fruit, oats, chia or flax | Low if made with juice |
| Liquid base | Milk, soy milk or water | Fruit juice |
| Sweetener | None; fruit only | Honey, syrup, sorbet or frozen yogurt |
| Calories | About 250 to 400 for a meal, 150 to 200 for a snack | Large sizes can run past 500 |
| How you drink it | Thick, with a meal, over 10 minutes | Thin, sipped through the morning |

The protein matters most. It is the most filling of the three macronutrients, and a smoothie with 25 grams of it behaves far more like a meal than one with 3. Fiber comes next: whole fruit, oats, chia and flax, not juice. And fruit juice as the base is the single most common mistake, because it adds sugar with none of the fiber that slows it down. The WHO counts the sugars in fruit juice as free sugars, the kind to keep under 10% of your daily calories.

How do you use a smoothie in a weight loss plan?
- Replace, do not add. A smoothie on top of your usual breakfast is extra calories. Swap it for a meal or a snack you would have eaten anyway.
- One a day is plenty. Chewing, plates and proper meals help appetite more than three drinks do. Smoothie-only "cleanse" plans tend to be low in protein and are hard to keep up.
- Make it thick and drink it slowly. A spoonable smoothie bowl or a thick glass over 10 minutes gives your appetite signals time to catch up.
- Watch the add-ins. Nut butter, honey, granola and coconut add up fast. One tablespoon of nut butter is about 95 calories; four is a meal.
- Pair it with movement you will keep doing. Our guides to the 12-3-30 treadmill workout and strength training for women are good places to start, and the protein smoothie recipes give six more combinations to rotate.
Smoothie ingredients to skip
Fruit juice and sweetened juice blends; frozen yogurt or sorbet; flavored yogurts, which can carry several teaspoons of added sugar (the FDA's added sugars label shows how much); and "detox" powders that promise fat loss. None of them fill you up, and the last ones have no evidence behind them.

Questions people ask about this
Can smoothies help you lose weight?
They can, if a smoothie replaces a higher-calorie meal or snack and keeps you full. That means 20 to 30 grams of protein, fiber from whole fruit, oats or seeds, no juice or syrup, and about 250 to 400 calories for a meal.
What should I put in a smoothie to lose weight?
Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, milk, soy milk or protein powder for protein; frozen berries or half a banana for sweetness; spinach for volume; and a tablespoon of chia, flax or oats for fiber. Skip juice, honey, sorbet and flavored yogurt.
Is it OK to replace a meal with a smoothie?
Replacing one meal a day with a balanced, protein-rich smoothie is fine for most healthy adults. Replacing every meal is not a good idea: it is hard to keep up and easy to fall short on protein, fiber and nutrients.
How many calories should a weight-loss smoothie have?
About 250 to 400 calories when it replaces a meal and around 150 to 200 for a snack. Large café smoothies often run higher, so check the nutrition information.
Are fruit smoothies bad for weight loss?
Not necessarily, but fruit-only smoothies made with juice are high in sugar and low in protein, so they rarely keep you full. Add protein and fiber and use milk or water as the base.
